Members of Garden City Cavy Club imported a shipment of 20 pedigree cavies from Australia, landing at Christchurch Airport on the afternoon of Friday 9th September 2016. We can expect to see these animals and their progeny at club shows over the coming months and years, adding much needed genetic vigour and breed purity.
It took a long time to get imports back into New Zealand after many many years due effectively to a ban caused by a lack of an Import Health Standard. With various members of the cavy fancy applying year in and year out for a health standard and some arranging with a USA based vet to draft a standard, someone at MPI finally listened and the Import Health Standard for cavies was signed off and took effect on the 17th March 2015. This has not only helped the show cavy fancy, but the much loved family pets that are now able to return with families from overseas.
